Pair-bonding instincts are activated whenever opportunity presents itself for (1) prolonged periods of eye contact; (2) sufficient privacy during which two persons engage in any gestures of touching; and (3) the giving of empathy, comfort, and compassion. When privacy exists, the emotions of empathy or even pity are activated, and sexual arousal may result.
